#InBedWithBloggers: Design Monarchy

Coming out of our recent blog articles, as well as Facebook post, you would be aware of the fact that Sanders included Design Monarchy and our blog, The Design Tabloid, into the circle of bloggers for the collaborative #Inbedwithbloggers campaign.

It all started a good couple of months back with Sanders hosting all the bloggers at their Salt River Showroom. Largely with a view of not only kicking off this campaign, but to introduce us to their products and services. The company tag line “Softer side of German Engineering” is just so true. There was a time in the 90’s when I worked for an upmarket bed linen company & through this learnt to appreciate the value of good sheets, duvet covers and moreover, how important it is to have a good duvet inner. Sanders do make outstanding duvet inner. Okay – I know what you are thinking – “bet it costs an arm and a leg, like anything that is of a high quality”. Whereas, truth be known – I found that because they have a large range on offer, there are many affordable lines to be had.

Now – onto Design Monarchy’s turn to produce the bed for the month of November. As you would have seen, the previous bloggers had some seriously inspirational and creative beds going on there. Different styles, different themes.

Our theme (for want of a better description) was going to be something bright and happy. Something fresh, carrying hints of what has become our signature style – somewhat classical, yet hints of quirky and trendy. Marica punted the colour yellow as the bright, fresh and summery element, particularly since tones of yellow have made headlines again. With that as our foundation, we decided that we would like to combine those colours with some of the colours to be had in the Sanders range of linen – white, light and dark grey.

Naturally, since metals have managed to retain their “hot stuff” trendiness – as well as being along the yellow spectrum – we brought in Hoi P’loy light fittings, bulbs and colourful cords. I am a huge fan of Hoi P’loy and their old school Edison light bulbs and we were thrilled when they agreed to join in as sponsors.

We were scratching our heads for a local creative from whom to source the yellow cushions, when it dawned on both of us, that Touchee Feelee has the perfect colour range in dreamy watercolour designs. From their range we collected yellow and grey toned scatter cushions. Yummy stuff. At the time of selecting the patterns, Rugby World Cup was the fever to be had. I noticed she had a cushion cover with a Springbokkie pattern and we threw those quirky little numbers into the fray as well – just to support The Bokke.

Robert Thomson supplied us with a gorgeous Scandi rug and punchy Eames-style chair. Hertex Fabrics was kind enough to lend us one of their stunning new barrel bags – I adore the smoky tie-dye design. We also pilfered loads of their fabric samples which we included in our styled scene for a bit of added interest.

To all parties – many thanks for making it possible!

All told, I was satisfied with our #Inbedwithbloggers window display production. Hope you like. Let us know what you think! Take a peek at our Facebook page to see all images of our Sanders shoot.

P.S. Want a bed as beautifully styled as this one? You can make this look your own – next week we will be posting an itemised “Get the Look” article. Keep your eyes peeled…

Terrific Tea Towels

I’ve been stumbling across so many gorgeous tea towels recently. It seems that unique and designer tea towels are all the rage, you see them everywhere – tea towels so stupendously pretty or quirky that is would be a crime to use them to dry dishes with! The tea towel is now more than ever, a desirable designer item – a blank canvas for creatives to express themselves on… tiny pieces of art that every home needs. I thought I would share a few local lovelies with you…

Vanilla Concrete who is maybe best known for their stunning feminine ceramics ranges recently released a beautiful textile range. The Notebook Collection consist of various sketch-like designs – products include gorgeous scatter cushions and table linen. The quirky tea towel designs features sweet phrases and cute doodles… love the bunny design!

I simply adore these whimsical floral tea towels by Naqiyah Mayat of niQi. The aptly named handmade design is called “Alice in Wonderland” and the gorgeous spring-coloured scheme of corals & aquas is simply delicious… love the lace and button detail!

Emma Wyngaard, the creative brain behind YumYum Handmade Textiles, designed the awesome vintage cutlery and kitchen scale tea towels above. Don’t you think they would look stunning if framed… far too funky to dry dishes with!

I was just waiting for the right post to feature the drop-dead gorgeous products of Tatum Lataste of Knysna-based company, Wild Rhubarb. She has a stunning range of products featuring beautiful sketchy nature-inspired designs screen printed onto striking bold-coloured cloth. These beautiful tea towels with vintage cutlery design is right up my alley!

These awesome tea towels reminded me of the children’s classic, the Town Musicians of Bremen – a stacked farm animals… or do you prefer the other tea towel with a African twist featuring a cheeky baboon and meerkat? These gorgeous beauties are from Nest and available via Meekel.

Stumbled across this quirky purple cabbage tea towel on Hello Pretty. Designed by super talented illustrator Euodia, of Touchee Feelee (LOVE the name btw), the cabbage tea towel also comes in pink. Watch this lady…

Another illustrator blessing the world with her whimsical designs. Kathy Mellor designed the three quirky tea towels above. My favourite is the Eggbeater tea towel, how about you?Hadeda is a treasure trove of awesome awesome product – they import most of it from Central and South America. I simply loved this striking Aztec print tea towel, it’s a total riot of colour and South American inspired patterns are super trendy at the moment!
