Notable Quotables: What I Love Most About My Home…

What I Love Most About My Home…

“Our favorite thing about our home is that it is filled with all the things we’ve collected on our adventures!”

Design*Sponge recently featured the quirky and creative Queen Anne Victorian home of touring musicians Darbie Nowatka and Justin Rice. When the duo is not touring with their band Bishop Allen, Justin writes and Darbie works as a graphic designer and makes jewellery and paper goods for her shop, Field Guide Design. Their home in Kingston, New York is filled with art, books, vinyl records, quirky collectables and vintage finds.

In response to the question “What I love most about my home is…” their answer had to be all the cherished curated items that they have collected during their travels (and adventures).

Be sure to pop over to Design*Sponge to check out the tour of the couple’s home. They have the coolest, most creative and enviable attic!

Notable Quotables: Don’t Compare Your Beginning…

large

“Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.”

Jon Acuff said comparison is poison.

Something to remember and take to heart the next time you feel disheartened and frustrated about you current circumstances.

So often we look at another’s success and can’t help but compare our walk to theirs. The truth, as Matt Cheuvront of Life Without Pants points out, is…

“Wherever you are in life with whatever you’re doing – you’re going to be ahead of some and behind others. That’s okay. Own where you are. Take time to embrace and celebrate that. Continue moving forward.

And never compare your beginning to someone else’s middle.”

Notable Quotables: What I Love Most About My Home…

“What I love most about my home is the memories it holds.”

Design*Sponge recently featured the romantic Victorian-style home of Anna Potter florist and owner of Swallows of Damsons. Anna’s Instagram feed is a treasure trove of beautiful photos (and flowers) from her life and work in Sheffield, England and, after getting a peek inside her romantic studio and shop, Anna and her husband Dan, an illustrator, were kind enough to share their home with Design*Sponge. In response to the question “What I love most about my home is…” Anna styled a beautiful floral arrangement with her quote answer…

Notable Quotables: What I Love Most About My Home…

“What I love most about my home is the people I share it with.”

The design and décor blog, Design*Sponge, has a regular feature where they give you a “sneak peek” into the beautiful homes and interiors of ordinary folk. To accompany their home tour each homeowner is asked to complete the phrase: “What I love most about my home is…” They then style a handwritten note capturing their answer. The resulting quote is usually touching, creative and beautifully personal.

I’m endeavouring to share one quote of note each month… I already know a good deal of them will be for the “What I love most about my home…” section!

Happy 94th Birthday Madiba!

Today we celebrate the 94th birthday of the Father of our Nation, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, pioneer of South African democracy! Such a great, compassionate, and incredibly wise man, who fought most his life for the freedom and equality of the South African people. What an amazing honour to partake in your life and to be able to say we where there.

Today is also Mandela Day, an international day adopted by the United Nations and celebrated on Madiba’s birthday every year. Mandela Day is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact. Individuals, communities and organisations are asked to donate 67 minutes to doing something for others, commemorating the 67 years that Nelson Mandela gave to the struggle for social justice.

The Mandela Day campaign message is:

“Nelson Mandela has fought for social justice for 67 years. We’re asking you to start with 67 minutes.”

Have amazing and blessed birthday Tata. May you have many many more!

We love you! x x x

Madiba Quotes:

“Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land (South Africa) will again experience the oppression of one by another.” – Nelson Mandela

“I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. There were many dark moments when my faith in humanity was sorely tested, but I would not and could not give myself up to despair. That way lays defeat and death.” – Nelson Mandela

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” – Nelson Mandela

“If there are dreams about a beautiful South Africa, there are also roads that lead to their goal. Two of these roads could be named Goodness and Forgiveness.” – Nelson Mandela

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” – Nelson Mandela

“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.” – Nelson Mandela

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” – Nelson Mandela
