Christmas Wish List: Luxury Edition

Christmas Wish List: Luxury Edition

by Rose McClement

Unlike previous years, for some bizarre reason, Christmas 2018 has me quite excited and getting into the spirit of giving and receiving much earlier. Normally I only catch that Xmas Fever after the 20th of December. I love it and intend nurturing this feeling of “a Time for Goodwill”.

When we decided to write this post about Christmas gifts, and more specifically what Marica and I would love to see lying under the Christmas tree, I decided to GO BIG OR GO HOME.

Time and time again, I’ve watched children putting in requests for their hearts desires with that “no holds barred” attitude. They do it from a place of delight and pleasure. Budget constraints are not even on their radar since they are totally oblivious to the Rand value of their desire. This many a parent can bear witness to. The only value that counts with little children is the innocent delight they get from their gift. This is how they do it – you spill the desires of your heart onto a piece of paper, written to a very special and very rich person called Santa Claus and send it off to him, carried on the wings of your heart.

So, in that same child-like spirit, THAT IS WHAT I’M DOING! I’m trawling through my heart space to find those desires that will make my day. Remember that I’m dreaming as if MONEY IS NO OBJECT…

So here goes with our VERY aspirational Christmas wish list:

A family vacay in sunny Mauritius…

A three week, all expenses paid holiday at a Club Med resort in Mauritius, accompanied by my immediate family members (hubby, daughters, sons-in-law, bro-in-law and 6 grandies). Where together we can have so much fun in the sun and enjoy each other. Even though money is no object – let’s hope Santa manages to pick up a bulk booking discount offer! This is the dream of a Granny’s heart.Read More »

10 Smashing Mother’s Day Gifts

By Marica

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and as you know from previous posts my recent Mother’s Day track record hasn’t been so good… not that I haven’t been trying. This year however I’ve decided to keep it simple – dead simple. In fact, I’m not even going to set a foot outside my front door – this year, I’m gift shopping online!

I am so thankful for the new wave of South Africa online design and décor shops – a few years ago none existed. Now you can comfortably browse and purchase the best that South African design has to offer without leaving your couch.

I have selected ten awesome Mother’s Day gifts from a few local online stores. The items range from budget – for those with a tight pocket, to luxe – for those who REALLY want to spoil mom and can afford to. Please be sure to follow the link in each image caption to the relevant online shop – nothing wrong with a bit of online window shopping!

Some Super Father’s Day Gifts

Buying a Father’s Day gift for my dad was always easy. He enjoyed the simple things – a good bottle of red wine or just relaxing around the braai with his family. Like most men, he also enjoyed a clever gadget and general outdoors-y things. For those of you who have not yet purchased something special for your dad in celebration of Father’s Day, I compiled three collections of awesome gifts & gadgets. Gifts for dads who like to RELAX, TRAVEL or BRAAI…

1.  A nice comfy modern classic like this gorgeous vintage leather Eames Lounge Chair from Magenta Jade.

2.  For the gadget-savvy dad, an Apple iPod – read an ebook, check rugby scores or play some Sudoku.

3.  For toasty toes – genuine sheepskin & suede loafers from Oskimo.

4.  A stylish throw to snuggle down with like this Geo throw from Mr. Price Home.

5.  Nothing like a good red wine. This Spier Signature Shiraz 2010 was one of only nine wines with 4-Star rating in this year’s Best Value Wine Guide. I have had it before – it’s smashing.

1.  I adore this gorgeous leather laptop bag for the fashion-conscious dad – it’s called the “Big Boy Bag” and is available at Meekel.

2.  Vintage-style leather toiletry bag from Dark Horse.

3. Perfect for a dad on the move – a Bodum Travel Press Coffee Mug available at 5rooms.com

4.  Ever heard of the survivalist Bear Grylls? Well, this a pocket knife / multi-tool that forms part of the Bear Grylls survival tools range available at Cape Union Mart – seriously hardcore.

5. A limited addition Top Gear TomTom GPS that features the voice of Jeremy Clarkson! Even I want that! Also available at Cape Union Mart.

1.  Weber Smokey Joe Portable Braai in turquoise. Perfect to take to the rugby or camping! Available from YuppieChef.

2.  The Mungo Man Cloth, a one-size-fits-all wrap around apron designed for tackling kitchen tasks with “manly abandon” – or for the greasy braai area. Also, YuppieChef.

3.  Super cool gadget called the Looftlighter – lights your braai or fireplace with super-heated air within 60 seconds (no more fire-lighters or lighter-fluid needed)!

4.  What about this electronic Thermo Fork to get that meat and roasts just right – from Hirsch’s.

5.  “Braai in Style” by Lannice Snyman – A South African institution in cookbook terms! The complete outdoor cookbook. Also available at YuppieChef.

And there you go! Fifteen Father’s Day gifts sure to be a hit! Enjoy Father’s Day everybody!

Cross Your Heart…

So, we entered the week countdown before Valentines Day 2012. To inspire you, here is a handful of quirky gift ideas for V-Day… all featuring the traditional Valentine’s heart! Like last year, we strive to keep V-Day cheese-free…forget the tacky plastic roses, rather get your loved one of these original beauties!

…oh, and keep your eyes peeled – there’s one or two more Valentines Day post coming your way this next week!

The talented Heather Moore, aka Skinny LaMinx, started making these awesome ceramic mugs with some of her designs on it. As you can see, there’s one or two Valentines Day mugs too! All available from her shop in 201 Bree Street in Cape Town.

I love, love, love these beautiful embroidered scatter cushions from @Home. Released with Valentines Day in mind it’s got a lovely handmade feel to it – I especially love the intricate almost crochet-like pattern…and the cute little birdies of course.

A whole heart & polka dot range from Ckramics – a variety of bowls, sugar pots, and the cutest milk jugs, but to name a few. The range includes these beautiful handpainted ceramic  bowls with lovely whimsy phrases, heart & dot designs. These beauties can be ordered through us.

One of the best-sellers at QuirkyMe, the heart-shaped Kiaat chopping board usually FLIES off their shelves. The lace-like engraving is simply beautiful – this chopping board would look stunning if used as a serving plate – maybe with gorgeous home-made bread or dainty appetisers on it?

If you’re still looking for the perfect V-Day gift for the lady in your life – what about this lovely little ceramic jewellery box with heart detail from The Pause Room (and be sure to hide something special…and expensive in it)!

I’m in love with this funky little addition to the Sagaform product range – a heart-shaped stoneware bowl in passionate red with a matching bamboo spoon. Even the spoon’s hanging hole is a little carved heart! Luckily, YuppieChef is the local supplier for Sagaform – so South Africans can also own some lovely Sagaform awesomeness.

This creative light from TinTown has love written all over it…literally! Love the intricate detail and the two little kissing Lovebirds at the top! Now that would be a romantic gift!

Or what about opting for one of Freshly Found‘s awesome message cards. They’re hand cut, lightly padded and stitched from various vintage record covers – awesome! A blackboard card heart is attached to the back along with a piece of chalk for your love message. The card is mounted on a vintage knitting needle – so you can pretty much stick it into anything. So clever!
