A couple of months ago we kicked off a roundup series focusing on awesome locally available accent lighting.

In our very first list, “10 Amazingly Cool Standing Lamps” we sourced and selected ten stunning floor lamps for your home – from quirky and playful, to chic and trendy. Our second instalment, “8 Strikingly Trendy Hanging Lamps“, focused on pendant lights, while our third post, “7 Contemporary & Chic Wall Lights“, featured lovely wall-fixed lighting.

Today we will conclude this lighting series with a final search to find what awesome light fittings the South African shelves have to offer.

We did a little online search to see how many trendy, attention-grabbing local table and desk lamps we could drum up. While finding desk lamps proved to be a breeze, the more traditional table lamps were a slightly harder find.

So, without further ado, here is our roundup of ten delightfully divine table and desk lamps for your home…

10 Amazingly Cool Standing Lamps for Your Home

Ambient lighting – we find that it is often the last element people think of when decorating their homes and spaces. In some sad cases it is a vital element completely forgotten about.

This type of lighting can be used to create a warm glow and set an intimate mood in your room when the main lights are switched off.

Loose-standing and move-able lamps, like standing lamps, are a great way of incorporating mood lighting into your space. Floor lamps add a vertical dimension to your space while taking up very little valuable floor space.

While some standing lamps can be rather drab, unappealing, and purely functional, the right selection can be an excellent tool to add another decorative element to your room.

We did a little online search to see how many trendy, attention-grabbing local floor lamps we could find. Here is our roundup of ten amazingly cool standing lamps for your home…

10 Amazingly Cool Standing Lamps:

Umthi Hanging Lamp

Designed by Meyer von Wielligh, the massive Umthi Hanging Lamp (Umthi means “tree” in Xhosa), takes inspiration from nature with its elegant tree branch-like structure. This beautifully designed lamp was one of the nominees for the Most Beautiful Object In South Africa (MBOISA) in 2016.

Search Tripod

Wire Shade & Base Floor Lamp

Want to make a quirky statement? Then this wire standing lamp is just the thing. Taking on the traditional shade and base shape of a lamp, it can be custom painted in any colour you desire. Imagine it in lipstick red or cool turquoise. Available from lim

MBOISA 2015: Nominations!

mboisa

It’s our great pleasure to once again share the much-anticipated Most Beautiful Object in South Africa (MBOISA) 2015 finalists with you. Beauty is profoundly subjective, at times even divisive. This year’s nominations feature a wildly mixed bag – from the personal to the practical to the political…

I won’t lie, I was rather surprised by some of the choices. I mean, a DSTV decoder is not my idea of a beautiful object. I am however sure the reasoning behind its nomination was sound. My vote would probably be a toss-up between the funky Haywire Chandelier by David Krynauw or the beautifully whimsy Centre Point: Dancing Ballerina by Llewellyn Davies.

“Every year Design Indaba invites the public to engage with the question of what constitutes beauty through the MBOISA award. More than just an object of visual delight, MBOISA encourage a wider definition of beauty – one that encapsulates attributes such as social significance, economic impact, usability, sustainability and even humour.” – Design Indaba

The winner will be determined by public vote. Vote for your most beautiful object in South Africa, via SMS or online. The designs of all the MBOISA finalists will be on show at Design Indaba Expo, open to the public from Friday 27 February to Sunday 1 March at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

{Go to the Design Indaba website (here) for a full description of each finalist’s design and to vote!}

Check Out This Cute Little Guy…

So check out this cute little guy…

It’s called the Sitting Lamp and it’s the brainchild of art director turned product designer, Graeme Bettles. Graeme also happens to be one of the talented Emerging Creatives we saw at this year’s Design Indaba – and we did promise to share our favourites with you!

The adorable task lamp is handmade from gorgeous solid pink beech wood and comes in two sizes. The smaller size makes for a quirky desk lamp, whilst the larger lamp – which at 55cm high isn’t that “little” at all. Just imagine an awesome toddler-sized lamp perched on the edge of your table – the perfect statement piece.

The Pinocchio-esque Sitting Lamp has tons of  personality – the figure can be easily adjusted into a range of different poses to look happy, sad, curious, mischievous, or well… just to cast some light on whatever you’re reading. Shame, maybe one day it too will turn into a real boy…

One thing is sure – it 100% awesome and 250% cute. What do you think? If you love it as much as we do, you can purchase your own little boy Sitting Lamp through 5rooms.com!
