Spoil Your Gal Pals with a Galentine’s Day Celebration

By Marica

Next week on the 14th many of us will be celebrating Valentine’s Day with our significant other. While some revel in the idea of a day filled with heart-shaped everything and love ballads, others might find it more than a little repugnant.

Celebrate your Gal Pals!

Whether you are the former or the latter, happily taken or contentedly single, we would like to introduce you to a fresh spin on Valentine’s Day. This year, set aside a day to celebrate the special ladies in your life – your gal pals, BFFs, girlfriends, your squad. Have a Galentine’s Day

Galentine's Daysource

What on earth is Galentine’s Day you might ask? Well, in the words of the unstoppable Leslie Knope (from Parks & Recreation), the woman who created the concept of Galentine’s Day:

“What’s Galentine’s Day? Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and just kick it breakfast style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus, frittatas!”

Galentine’s Day is an opportunity to express just how much your best friends mean to you and to thank them for their loyal support – all the inside jokes, shoulders to cry on, life advice and glasses of wine.

So how does one celebrate Galentine’s?

Put some genuine thought and effort into the occasion. Do food, do decor, do activities, and definitely do get dolled up! Your gal pals should feel special and pampered!

You can be as corny or as classy as you want. Go full-out with the traditional red hearts and Cupid’s arrows or create an elegant scene with tasteful decorations… or else throw in a little bit of both. Just be sure to glam it up!

Galentine’s Day Nibbles

What is a party without good eats? Little finger foods or canapés are always a good idea. AND don’t forget the sweets – cake is a must – you are celebrating a special day after all.

Another excellent and interactive idea is to have a DIY food station – i.e. make your own pasta, or pizza, or hamburgers. Furthermore what is a good gal pal bash without cocktails?

Galentine’s Day Activities

While it is so easy to while away hours with our besties doing nothing but gabbing, Galentine’s Day should feature some rememberable activity. For instance, have a home spa day – pamper your girls with homemade facials and mani-pedis. Mimosa, please!

A rom com movie night is also a great idea. A big “Christmas bed” in front of the TV is a must – there is nothing as inviting and slothful as a room full of pillows and blankets! Then pop some popcorn and binge-watch all those soppy romantic movies that you can never get your man to watch with you. And the dress code – definitely your most comfy PJs!

Why not class it up with High Tea? Lay a table with delectable treats, a collection of teas, and beautiful feminine decorations. Oh, and don’t forget a hat!

Want to take your Galentine’s Day fun to the next level? Try a craftsy DIY activity like making your own jewellery or having a cupcake decorating challenge. The ladies at Glitter Guide had a card making session and a macramé making lady date.

Galentine’s Day Goodie Bag

Now gift bags, and don’t worry, it does not have to be in league with the Oscars gift bags – no need to break the bank. Just a collection of small, affordable gifts that will make your friends feel loved and appreciated.

Lip gloss, nail polish and a little bit of hand cream is an excellent goodie bag liner. Create a special playlist and burn it to a CD so your gal pals can have their own Galentine’s Day mix to remember the day by. Add a personalised card – it does not necessarily have to be handmade – as long as the message inside comes from the heart. Then, a nice smelling candle or cute coffee mug, and a little something to nibble on – fudge or a delicious chocolate maybe?

It sure looks like a whole lot of fun! How will you be celebrating your Gal Pals this Valentine’s Day? Is a Galentine’s Day bash in your immediate future?

Decor Quick Tip: Mason Glass Jar Candles

Quick Tip #49: Glass Jar Candles

It is time for our very first decorating Quick Tip of 2017! Today we continue our “cool things to do with glass jarsDecor Quick Tip miniseries in which we focus on quick and easy ideas pertaining to the good ole fashioned Mason jar, a.k.a. Ball jar or Consol jar (as we call them in South Africa). In case you missed out on the first tip in this series you can check out our “Glass Jar Soap Dispenser” tip: here.

#49  Forget paying a heap of cash in store for a fancy candle – why not get crafty and make your own? It is easier than you would think! A glass canning jar, also known as a “Mason” or “Consol” jar, would make for a perfect, vintage chic candle holder. Make a traditional wax candle by melting soy wax flakes and adding colour and scent oil to create a gorgeous scented candle. These would make beautiful gifts for loved ones! OR, keep those pesky mosquitoes at bay outside by creating citronella candles out of a glass jar, citronella lamp oil and torch wick.

See the step-by-step DIYs here: Something Turquoise & One Little Project.

Glass Jar Soap Dispenser

Quick Tip #48: Glass Jar Soap Dispenser

Last month we finished the last of our Quick Tips about interesting things to do with the humble clothes hanger. So it is high time for another! A couple of weeks ago I spotted a cute Nifty video about things to do with glass jars and immediately thought that would make for an excellent new Décor Quick Tip mini series. So without further ado here is the very first Quick Tip about cool things to do with Mason jars, Ball jars or Consol jars (as we call them in South Africa)…

#48 Forget grimy bars of soap or generic plastic hand soap dispensers that get tossed in the bin. Why not make your very own stylish and sleek soap dispenser from an ordinary glass jar. All you need is glass canning jar, also known as a “Mason” or “Consol” jar, and a salvaged pump nozzle from a discarded soap dispenser. Cut an appropriate sized hole in the metal lid of the jar and insert the pump nozzle. Now just fill the jar with your favourite hand soap for the bathroom or dish soap for the kitchen!

See a step-by-step DIY: here & here.

How to make a Pallet Swing - SuzelleDIY

{Video} How to Make a Pallet Swing!

Did you know that this coming Sunday, the 9th of October, is South Africa’s very first official “Garden Day“? No? Well, neither did I.

Luckily, our gal SuzelleDIY brought this fact to my attention while I perusing her latest DIY videos. In celebration of Garden Day, Suzelle show us how to make a fun garden swing out of old wooden pallets.

Now to be honest, I have had my fill of pallet-related DIYs and furniture designs. The whole pallet idea was fun and unusual when it first started trending a good few years ago. It also played right into the extremely popular Industrial design style which further boosted the pallet fad’s popularity. Like with most quirky fads, everyone jumped on the pallet DIY bandwagon. My Pinterest feed was filled with hundreds of pallet furniture and decor ideas. Some were brilliant and beautiful, but unfortunately most were tacky and unrefined. I soon grew tired of the fad.

That being said, I can still appreciate a clever pallet DIY idea – especially if its use is appropriate to the space and home style, and if it is refined and well thought through. Suzelle’s Pallet Swing ticks all those boxes which is why I am sharing it with you today! It is a fun and playful idea for the garden or backyard and the design is uncomplicated and tasteful. The addition of pretty bunting and colourful cushions makes for a happy and inviting scene!

Sigh, wish I had a tree branch big and strong enough to accommodate such a fun swing in my garden! I can already envisage myself spending hours on it reading and sipping refreshing cocktails.

Have a happy Garden Day this Sunday guys!

P.S. Marianne – I like your leggings!

Clothes Hanger Craft Storage - Washi Tape Storage

Quick Tip #47: Clothes Hanger Craft Storage

Here is the very last tip in our Décor Quick Tip mini series about interesting things to do with the humble clothes hanger…

#47  The humble clothes hanger can be one of the most versatile, inexpensive and uncomplicated organisational tools. This is especially true in the creative workspace or craft room where there is a lots of bits and bops to organise and store. Multi-tiered trouser hangers make excellent washi tape and ribbon dispensers. Use the hangers to keep fabric pieces organised and at hand for your next sewing project. Place scrapbooking materials in plastic sleeves and use skirt hangers with clips to hang them in an ordered fashion.

See more examples of clothes hanger displays on our “Storage” pinboard on Pinterest: here.
