Pantone Colour of 2015: MARSALA

I’m sure by now you have all spotted a certain colour trend featured heavily on all image-sharing websites. You know the colour I’m referring to – it is sort of a dusty red-ish brown-ish colour… Or is it more like a dull cranberry? Maybe it’s pink-ish paprika? Anyhoo, however you choose to describe it, it is called Marsala and it is Pantone’s Colour of the Year 2015.

Named after the Italian wine, the colour Marsala is said to be both elegant and earthy. While it took me some time to warm to it, I have seen some beautiful applications. Sleek Hollywood leading ladies walking the red carpet draped in gorgeous Marsala-coloured silks and a plush Marsala-hued velvet sofa – very dramatic.

Here is what Pantone had to say about their choice:

“Much like the fortified wine that gives Marsala its name, this tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness. This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.”

“Whether in a flat or textured material, or with a matte or gloss finish, this highly varietal shade combines dramatically with neutrals, including warmer taupes and grays. Because of its burnished undertones, sultry Marsala is highly compatible with amber, umber and golden yellows, greens in both turquoise and teal, and blues in the more vibrant range.”

So what do you think of the Colour of the Year? Yay or Nay?

Colour-Coded Inspiration: Red, White & Blue

By Marica

It seems the month of July is set to be a celebration of red, white, and blue. America celebrated their Independence Day on the 4th with their usual patriotic tricolour vigour, Andy Murray’s tennis triumph lead to surge in British nationalistic pride as he was the first Brit to win the Wimbledon Men’s Singles in over 77 years, and then this coming weekend (the 14th to be exact) the French will be celebrating Bastille Day.

Now, when creating a room using the red, white, and blue colour combo consider keeping the white colour ratio high with pops of the brighter colours – this will insure a fresh interior. Do not to overdo the red and blue. You also don’t necessarily have to go the patriotic route and slap a flag everywhere – red, white, and blue colouring is closely associated with nautical design. Incorporate a handful of stripes and nautical baubles in your room to give it that maritime flair!

Sometimes… ever so often, I have the tiniest bit of flag envy. Don’t get me wrong – I love the South African flag and everything it stands for… but jeez louise it sure is difficult to incorporate that multicoloured design into an attractive interior.

Colour-Coded Inspiration: Red & Pink

By Marica

I clearly remember my mom telling me back in the nineties to never ever wear pink and red together as “those two colour just don’t mix“. It’s true, the nineties (probably the eighties too) did not look kindly on the pink and red combo – it was a massive faux pas. It was something the 10 year-old me could not understand – I thought it look pretty!

However, in the last decade or so the uptight, and frankly unreasonable, unspoken rule about the combination of reds and pinks has softened. Once again it is trendy to marry red and pink! And today I am overjoyed as nothing makes me happier than this punchy colour combo! Mmm, it reminds me of candy – it’s a deliciously edible duo. So, for your enjoyment, fest your eyes on the following pink & red colour-coded inspirations…
