Get This Look: Rustic Chic Bedroom

By Marica

Whilst desperately searching for an image or style to base the latest “Get This Look” on,  I remember an image of a rather unusual Rustic Chic bedroom I  pinned to Pinterest a handful of months ago. To date this feature / inspiration image remains the most repinned image on my Pinterest profile. What about this interior made this image so popular with my fellow “pinners”? – I don’t know… Maybe it’s the barn door headboard or the bold yellow-painted ceiling (a brave choice for sure). I have to agree there is something strangely appealing about this little rustic spaces, it sure looks comfy… and sunny.

I struggled to find a throw similar to the beautiful one used in the image, and as result my collection of items is a little more red whereas the original room is more purple. However, this is the beauty of a Rustic Chic interior – it’s suppose to be mix-and-match. A well-planned Rustic Chic interior or room should have a combination of unrefined, uncomplicated objects offset with more contemporary and elegant pieces and lines. Try sourcing reclaimed or upcycled items like the barn door, or maybe an old worn timber bedside table – it should definitely have a lot of texture. Rustic Chic – where “well-worn meet new”.

Get This Look: Nautical Bedroom

Get The Look - Nautical Bedroom - The Design TabloidI know what you are thinking…blue AGAIN?! I promise it was purely accidental (but isn’t it pretty?)! One of my favourite elements in a good nautical designed interior, apart from the various shades of blue of course,  is the use of stunning bold stripes. Whether thick, narrow or grouped, nothing says “nautical” like stripes. Other elements that compliment a nautical interior are rustic and distressed timbers, beautiful coloured or  blasted glass, a blue/sand/white colour palette (maybe even with a splash of red) and ocean-inspired baubles. One must however be careful when creating a nautical interior not to venture over the “tacky” boundary – avoid adding to many bits-and-bobs.

4. Sand & Blue Striped Throw – @Home

5. Another current trend that can also compliment a nautical interior is industrial elements this beautiful industrial-esque pendant light is from Le Grange Interiors.

6. Use stools as side tables and don’t be afraid to use more than one on either side of your bed. These gorgeous rustic stools are from Le Grange Interiors.

7. Invest in a beautiful piece of sea-inspired fine art or prints. I have seen some beautiful abstract seascapes to compliment a more contemporary setting. I found this photo of Marieke Prinsloo’s Sea Point sculptures on Times Live - wouldn’t it make a stunning framed print?!

8. This beautiful coral-like ceramic vase is from Pezula Interiors.

9. I love the subtle blasted effect on these beautiful coloured glass vases from Pezula Interiors – it reminds me of sea glass.

Get This Look – Industrial Dining

By Marica

When I found this beautiful image on the website of renowned French photographer, Pierre-Jean Verger, I felt so inspired I just had to do a “Get the Look” for it. The core of Industrial Style is to expose elements that are usually hidden – brickwork, exposed I-beams, unfinished wood and all the nuts, bolts and mechanisms that we generally hide. Factory machinery and other bits-and-bops can easily find a new home as brilliant Industrial Style décor items. Industrial Style likes big open-plan spaces as the style originates from converted lofts, warehouses and factories. Other items and furniture that goes well with an Industrial Style space is those from the Mid-Century Modern era – feel free to throw in one or two retro items.

Get This Look: Chic Mauritian Island Style

By Marica

After Rose shared her beautiful holiday pics of sunny Mauritius with me, we thought it a good idea to do a Mauritian “Get The Look”. Mauritian style is very similar to the Pacific Island Style of interiors – you will find a lot of woven, wicker and cane furniture and ocean inspired décor and colours. Mauritian Style (like most Tropical Island styles) has also been influenced by the vast number of Indian and Eastern inhabitants - a lot of traditional Hindu and oriental design can be found in everyday Mauritian interiors. The feature/inspiration image we used is a lovely representation of what an upmarket, chic Mauritian Island Style interior could look like.
